ON CULTURAL REFERENCE IN APPROACHING LITERARY TEXTS BASED ON JACOBSON’S COMMUNICATIVE THEORY

Abstract

In line with the trend of applying linguistic theories into discourse analysis, this paper is an attempt towards the application of Roman Jacobson’s communicative model in analyzing the role of historical and socio-cultural contexts in relation to linguistic signals and aesthetic signals in the process of approaching literary texts. In terms of pragmatics, locutionary acts and receptive acts are always formed out of the referencing operation among communicative contexts, linguistic features and the contents of the utterances. This also serves as a rule for the process of approaching literary texts. Based on R. Jacobson’s proposed model, the author of this paper has built up a conception of the reference of historical and socio-cultural contexts in the process of approaching literary texts. To clarify this conception, in this paper, the researcher has analyzed the possibilities of relating historical and socio-cultural contexts in reference to linguistic signals, aesthetic signals, titles, literary materials and artistic images in literary works. In each case, through specific examples, the researcher has suggested ways to identify these referencing angles.
