RHYMING PATTERNS IN THE VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE

Abstract
Rhyming is one of the major grammatical modes in the Vietnamese language, which is present in all syntactic and morphological aspects. Vietnamese rhyming is not highly complicated, but relatively diverse due to its appearance at different levels. A thorough study of this mode in Vietnamese probably requires a specialized research work. Within the scope of an article, we can only present a brief overview of the rhyming patterns. At the morphological level, we consider rhyming words as the “central bases” for the identification of “marginal” phenomena (i.e. compounds with rhyming forms, rhyming words with initial glottal stop sounds). At the syntactic level, we briefly describe their commonly used forms (e.g. the rhyming patterns of words; the use of “iec” as a rhyming pattern; and the spoken rhyming pattern).
