Abstract
From the analysis of the concept of semiotics as a tool and the capabilities of the empirical world, this article identifies the scope and research domain of this discipline. The bases for analyzing the three points above are the close intersections between semiotics and linguistics in the process of its formation and development. The three fundamental dimensions for determining the scope of semiotics are semantics, syntactics and pragmatics. Hjelmslev's division of connotative semiotics and meta-semiotics is testified by specific issues related to text analysis and the identification of the object under study.
