INTERNET AS A FACTOR IN STUDENTS’ CAREER CHOICE: A CASE STUDY INVOLVING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HO CHI MINH CITY AND BIEN HOA CITY

Abstract
In the current digital era, with the explosion of information technology, the Internet is recognized as one of the key factors affecting students’ career decisions. Therefore, the proper assessment and effective usage of the Internet would have important and practical implications for vocational education. This study applied mixed methods, in which 400 students were surveyed by questionnaires and 24 students were interviewed in focus group discussion, and those were conducted in HCMC and Bien Hoa City of Dong Nai province. The results of the study confirm that the Internet has comparatively "empowered" students and helps them be autonomous in career decisions. Rather than orientating their career path from the beginning, the role of the Internet primarily affects the process of supplementing information and strengthening students’ confidence in their previous choices . Furthermore, the process of transmitting information from the Internet to students during the career selection is considered as an interpersonal communication rather than mass communication.
