THE FORMATION OF BABA MYONYA COMMUNITY: AN ANALYSIS ON THE IMPACT OF TRADING BETWEEN MALACCA AND CHINA IN THE CENTURY XV - XVI

Abstract
Located at the golden position in East-West’s trading system in the Middle Ages, Malacca trading port attracted many countries, particularly China. In the past 2 centuries of the prosperous Malacca kingdom, Chinese merchants involving in the trade network had a huge impact on the local community. A part of Chinese traders married local women that led to the formation of a new community - Baba Nyonya. In this article, we used a method of analyzing various historic documents to discuss the impact of trade relations between the Malacca Kingdom and the Ming, thereby contribute to the study of Malacca’s trade history and the history of the Baba Nyonya community.
