Abstract
In Northern Vietnamese of the Red River delta, a perturbation phenomenon between /l/ and /n/ is reported, which is mainly researched from the views on education of pronunciation (Trần Thị Thìn: 1979,…) and socio-linguistics (Nguyễn Thị Thanh Bình: 2000,…). But the mechanism causing this phenomenon hasn’t been revealed yet. In this paper, I make following two assertions based on speech data of Northern Vietnamese: 1) probability of perturbation between /l/ and /n/ differs depending on adjacent phonetic environment of /l/ and /n/; 2) the main causes of such a gap of probability of perturbation are “spreading nasality and vocalic co-articulation”. This results are implicating that physiological constraints on speech organ are one of the factors causing this phenomenon.
