Abstract
In recent years, with the pressure of population and economic development, there have been significant impacts on the water quality of the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river, for example, the exploitation of minerals and the construction of hydropowers in the basin. This study bases on the analysis of daily water discharge and sediment concentration between 1996 and 2018 for the Thu Bon River at the Nong Son gauging station. The results showed that the annual water discharges and sediment fluxes of the Thu Bon River were strong temperal variability. In fact, annual water discharges varied from 224 to 494 m3/s and annual sediment fluxes ranged between 0.23 Mt/yr and 5.22 Mt/yr. In addition, we observed that the temperal variability of annual sediment flow was strongly related to the hydrological conditions. However, the sediment flux loaded by the Thu Bon river significantly decreased when the Song Tranh 2 dam came into operation. Infact, after 2010 (corresponding to the operation of the Song Tranh 2 reservoirs), the sediment flux decreased from 2.07 Mt/yr to 1.14 Mt/yr. Result from this study indicates the strong impact of hydroelectric dams on natural sediment concentration of the Thu Bon river which may leads to the erosion in the coastal area and ecological imbalance in the Thu Bon basin.
